Dwarf Fortress Animal Training – Steps to Train Creatures

Before you can begin any training, you must first capture some wild animals because in order to train an animal, you must first have an animal to train.

You can begin training a captured, trainable creature after you have it contained in a cage. Depending on whether the animal is a herbivore or a carnivore, you will need an area for animal training and some vegetables or meat.

Use z to bring up the status screen, then choose an animal from the menu to have your animal trainer start training a wild animal. Once your caught wild animal has been chosen from the list, press t to assign a trainer to it.

A training zone (i-t) and a dwarf with the ability to train animals are required for some trained animals to acquire additional training for hunting or combat. Then you may find your trainable animal by going to your animal status screen (z-Enter). Animals that can be trained include those for which you can press either w for training in battle or h for training in hunting. You can choose a specific trainer to do this task if you’d like.

Train a Hunting Animal

An uncaged trainable animal with [TRAINABLE] or [TRAINABLE HUNTING], an activity zone for animal trainers, and an animal are needed for this. Animals used for hunting can be assigned (v-select dwarf-p-a) to accompany a hunter and help with the hunt; once assigned, they cannot be unassigned.

Train a War Animal

An uncaged trainable animal with [TRAINABLE] or [TRAINABLE WAR], an activity zone for training animals, and an animal trainer are needed for this. Animals in pastures can only be trained if the zone is inside the pasture. They can be allocated to specific dwarves in the same manner as hunting animals (v-select dwarf-p-a)

The relationship between an animal trainer and their training companion can develop over time (“established a bond with an animal training partner”), and it is depicted in the dwarf’s relationships panel.
